The Bottom Line

The PlantWatcher is an easy to use tool for one of the most forgettable gardening tasks - watering your houseplants. It takes a little thought to get started, but once you get it right, you can forget about it for 3 weeks. If your houseplants are begging you for more attention, the PlantWatcher is a low-tech automatic watering system you should look into.

Pros

·                          Great for forgetful waterers

·                          Keeps plants watered during vacations.

·                          Waters the plant at the roots.

·                          Can be used to fertilizer too.

Cons

·                          Too large to hide behind smaller plants.

·                          Sometimes 3 weeks is not enough.

Description

·                          Basically a reservoir with a wick/sensor that sits in the soil and 'senses' when water is needed.

·                          A flexible tube allows you to direct the water and release it near the plant’s roots.

·                          Good for people who forget to water, but also great for people who tend to over water.

·                          Comes in 3 models sized for 6" to 12" pots.

·                          Clear green plastic looks like it will stand out, but actually blends in well with most plants.

Guide Review - PlantWatcher - Automatic Potted Plant Watering System

The PlantWatcher fuses high tech with low tech. It’s a simple plastic reservoir with a felt like disk that sits just below the soil line and tells the reservoir when it’s time to water. I tried it because my houseplants have to drop leaves on my head and beg me for attention, before I will remember to water them. When I first saw the PlantWatcher, I thought it was going to be an eyesore in my pot. Then about 3 weeks later I was looking at the package label on my desk and I’d forgotten which plant I had tested it in. Obviously I hadn’t watered in awhile, but I also hadn’t noticed the plant watcher sitting in the pot near my television and it certainly wasn’t an eyesore,

The bullet points pretty much tell you what this tool is. It’s simple enough to set up and install and since my Marble Queen Pothos plant was not wilting, it seems to have been a big success. Although I’m not the type to run out and buy a lot of little devices to make up for my bad habits, I probably will add a PlantWatcher or 2 each year, for the houseplants I really value. http://gardening.about.com/od/toppicktools/gr/PlantWatcher.htm

I confess, I am awful at remembering to water houseplants. Since most gardeners spend as much time as they can outdoors, I suspect I'm not alone. The PlantWatcher really is a cleaver little tool. It has a sensor at its base that can tell when it's time to release more water into the soil. One fill-up lasts me at least a month, but since I'm so forgetful about watering my houseplants, I can't be more specific. If you have the opposite problem and tend to over-water your plants, PlantWatcher will end that too. It comes in 3 different sizes and you can also add liquid fertilizer to the reservoir, killing 2 birds with one stone.  http://gardening.about.com/od/winterinthegarden/tp/GardenGifts1.htm

Being an engineer, I deal with product and quality issues all of the time. I truly appreciate the design elements and creativity involved in making a highly complex product functional that seemed uncomplex. It is rare to find a product that actually does what it says minus all the disclaimers and your website is easy to navigate.  I consider it an exceptional find and product value for the price.
